Salvaged from past festivals, reconfigured artist tent frames are the building blocks for this gateway to the East Art Show. Combined with alternating fabric panels, the stacked and joined canopy structures seem to literally pop-up and over the sidewalk. This playful reuse of festival remnants creates a synergistic assemblage that rewards multiple viewings. Akin to cloud gazing, shifting perspectives created by your distance and viewing angle invite fluctuating perceptions and associations: from one vantage point, the repeating shapes might suggest a windmill or waterwheel traces of Salina’s agrarian roots and connection to the Smoky Hill River. From another viewpoint, the concave, radiating lines echo the shape of a band shell, or perhaps recall the Art Deco architecture found downtown. What will you see in the dynamic interplay of open and closed forms, of light and shadow?
